I believe businesses should be honest and upfront about their costs and revenue, therefore, the following list goes through a breakdown of the $550 price of euthanasia

Permits

  • Business name registration = $102/3 years

  • Poison's permit (allows me to obtain the sedations used) = $163 application fee + $109/year

  • Veterinary Practice Board WA license (to practice as a veterinarian)= $465/year

  • Veterinary House Call Practice permit (to allow me to practice outside a clinic) = $530 application fee + $420/year

Insurance

  • Professional indemnity insurance = $408.05/year

  • Public liability = $355.52/year

Advertisement

  • Wix Website = $174.55/year

  • Wix business email = $58.80/year

  • Google ads = $127.75/fortnight

  • MOO Business cards and distribution = $324.83

Equipment

  • Safe and Lock (securely holds the sedations) = $133.74 (large one for home, small one for travel, Bike lock to secure small safe to the vehicle)

  • Lockable door knob (to secure sedation on FFH premise) = $67.98 ($35 for the door knob, $32.98 for appropriate installation)

  • Safe sorter = $3.50

  • Tourniquet = $47.36 (4 different sizes)

  • Stretcher = $296.24

  • Cardiac stethoscope = $621.50 (7 year warranty)

Pharmaceutical

  • Zolitel 100mg/ml (0.85ml/10kg) = $98.97/5ml vial (expires 8 days after reconstitution, assume 10% wastage)

  • Lethobarb 325mg/ml (0.5ml/kg) = $186.99/250ml bottle

    Additional sedation (circumstantial)

  • Acepromazine 10mg/ml (0.05ml/10kg) = $53.59/100ml bottle (assume 10% wastage)

  • Propofol 10mg/ml (4ml/10kg) = $5.90/20ml vial (assume 10% wastage)

*Assuming one appointment per fortnight; 20kg dog; travel is 20km to and from; vial of zoletil per week with none of the other sedations utilised; 70% private cremation + 20% general cremation + 10% home burial;  equipment and stationary are paid off in 1 year; travel and euthanasia takes an average of 1.5 hour. Profit likely increases with more appointments per fortnight.
